Super Sculpey

Tag: Industry News, Tips and Tricksadmin @ 10:10 am

ssculpeyfirm_new.jpg

NEW!! Many sculptors desire an extra firm clay that can be carved and used for projects that require fine details. Super Sculpey FIRM is the extra firm sculpting clay that is grey in colour, allowing sculptors to create fine details and photographers to catch these fine points on film. Unique in both form & colour, this new sculpting clay brings creative options to the sculpting world.

ssculpey_box.jpg

Super Sculpey is the ultimate sculpting compound. It is used by movie studios and professionals worldwide and a favourite with doll makers.

History

In response to the popularity of Sculpey. Super Sculpey was formulated. Users required a clay of greater tensile strength and Super Sculpey was the answer.

Characteristics

Super Sculpey is a translucent pink-beige colour. It is an easy to condition polymer requiring minimal hand kneading or rolling through a pasta machine to prepare for use. It features fine tooling and detailing characteristics and does not fill in after tooling. If you opt to  paint your cured piece, we recommend acrylic paint or the application of water based glaze prior to painting with oils. Paint should be applied in thin washes rather than thick coats for the best paint to clay bond. After curing Super Sculpey bakes to a ceramic-like hardness and can be sanded to a fine smoothness.

Curing

Super Sculpey should be cured in a preheated 275 degree F (130 degree C) oven for 15 minutes per quarter inch thickness. DO NOT MICROWAVE. For example a piece of 1/2″ thickness would be cured for 30 minutes. The layering method is recommended for larger pieces of construction.

supersculpey_viking.gif Use

The translucent pink-beige colour has made Super Sculpey the favoured polymer of many art doll makers. Because of the fine tooling and detailing characteristics of Super Sculpey. It is frequently the chosen clay for making prototypes from which moulds are made for sculptures. Additionally, artists are producing finely detailed finished sculptures using Super Sculpey.

Storage

Sculpey polymer clay products should remain fresh if properly stored in a cool place, away from heat & direct sunlight.

The Prismatic colours can be used to create unique customized cars, trucks and polycarbonate / lexan bodies.ALCLAD II’s wide range of uses make it the perfect finish for injected polystyrene kits and polycarbonate / lexan bodies. ALCLAD II is available with both ‘plastic or lexan’ instructions . ALC101 - to - ALC113 carry plastic use directions.

alclad_car2_b.jpgAPPLICATION GUIDE-PLASTIC MODELS: For use on injection plastic kits an acrylic primer is necessary. ‘Regular ALCLAD’ is similar in strength to lacquer / cellulose car paints-injected polystyrene plastics frequently have areas which ALCLAD can craze. Apply one of these primers before using Regular ALCLAD:
Tamiya Plastic Primers-white or grey
Auto Primer - white or grey
Plastic primers and auto primers should be lightly polished with 1000/1200 wet & dry paper to give a less absorbent glossy surface. ALCLAD High Shine - Chrome and Polished Aluminium both require a dark glossy base. Polished Aluminium should be used over Tamiya TS-14 gloss black,or gloss black auto paint. Chrome and only chrome should be used over gloss black model enamel paint.

lacquer_tail.jpgSPRAYING: ALCLAD should be sprayed at 15-20psi.
Spray 1 ½ -2 ½ inches away from the model.
Use the airbrush like a paint brush not an aerosol.

aaab58_b.jpgBuffing is not necessary although tonal variation can be made by polishing selected panels with micromesh. A sealer is not required.
Regular ALCLAD can be masked and over painted Decal solutions can be used with Regular ALCLAD, but are not recommended for Chrome or Polished Aluminium.
Prismatic Finishes: - these colours should be applied over a dark base-auto paint or Tamiya TS paints. Spray ALCLAD Prismatic at 20psi use a wide spray pattern, cover the model evenly with as few passes as possible. The Prismatic material will seem slightly rough when dry..this is normal. Build up 2-3 coats of clear lacquer or model varnish to obtain a deep reflective finish.

lacquer_rear.jpgAPPLICATION GUIDE - POLYCARBONATE / LEXAN BODY SHELLS: The surface must be thoroughly cleaned - remove release agent, adhesive residue and finger marks.
Regular ALCLAD - apply 2-3 light coats at 15-20 psi-back with any R/C paint.

  • Decals do not need a sealing varnish before or after application.
  • Regular shades can be buffed to make them a bit shinier with Micromesh, but Chrome & Polished Aluminium will not need this if your undercoat is super smooth & shiney.
  • Do not overpaint Chrome & Polished aluminium.
  • Acrylics & enamels can be used over regular shades.
