In Norse mythology, the Valkyries were warrior maidens of the god Odin and were sent by him to the battlefields to choose the fallen warriors who were worthy of a place in Valhalla. They flew through the air and sea on winged horses wearing helmets and shields. As supernatural beings, they were often associated with fairness, brightness and gold, as well as bloodshed.
